"Thanks!" to many of you, including Irina, who shared the following email J.Crew sent this morning.

The email not only features the Pleated Jardin Skirt in Heart Throb (item 64011; $128.00), but also shares its back story with customers:

Regardless of what the calendar says, we're always in the mood for love. Cue the jardin skirt, featuring a unique interpretation of our favorite symbol, the heart, given such pop culture play over the years by NYC tourism campaigns, Keith Haring, and chocolate-box-giving boyfriends. How was this print developed? Our designer was shopping the stalls at Les Puces de Saint-Ouen, the Paris flea market, and picked up a deck of unusual 19th-century playing cards. Back in the states, our in-house print illustrator used the Queen of Hearts as his muse and sketched out his own iterations- manipulating the scale to make sure they fit just right. This is one creation sure to win hearts.

This skirt is another one of those prints that either customers adore or avoid. I love the length and its fullness. The print is cute, but does it limit its wear-ability?

J.Crew of Season's Past: {a look in the closet}

It's that time again, to take a look at an image of J.Crew pieces from seasons past! As caribbelle (in this post) so beautifully termed, "ye olde j crew of yore".

This little number is the Veruschka Dress (Item 91142; $335.00) from 2008. Now this is the kind of print that you either love-to-love or love-to-hate. I fall in the first category.

J.Crew shared that the dress was "inspired by an iconic decade of glamorous bohemians". Glamorous indeed! Moreover, they "asked an artist to create a spectacular custom-print for this silk-twill boatneck dress—and aligned it at the hem for extra drama". Nice!

I adore the intricate print. (I think it is one of J.Crew's top ten best prints of all time.) I also love the style of the dress- from the boat-neck, to three-quarter sleeves, to its hidden pockets. Perfection in my book!

J.Crew Updates Website with New Arrivals!

"Thanks!" to many of you, including J.CrewJD (in this post), Ema (in this post), as well as Maryeb, who let us know that J.Crew had a mini update to its website today (click here to view online).

There are some new arrivals for men (click here) & women (click here). {wahoo!} It looks like Crewcuts (click here) has been updated, but not the J.Crew Collection (click here).

Honestly, I did not even catch this mini-update of new arrivals online. Oh well! As for the new arrivals...

Of course my top two picks involve polka dots. I am a sucker for them! The Retro-Dot Tunic (Item 72686; $65.00) is gorgeous! Such an airy piece with fantastic details like the collar and belt.

The Elinor Dress in Polka Dot (Item 74049; $148.00) looks perfect for any occasion. Wear it alone for a night on the town. Wear it with a denim jacket for a Saturday afternoon at a flea market. Loves it!

J.Crew Goes Mobile {about time!}

J.Crew has a mobile version of their website!

What's this mean? Whenever a customer accesses J.Crew's website on their mobile device, they will be automatically redirected to a mobile template (click here).

What's the big deal about this? It makes navigating J.Crew's site a whole lot easier on the mobile device (like smartphones and tablets). This is because the mobile template has a specially formatted layout suited for small screen sizes.

Why would I even use this? This feature is great for browsing J.Crew's website. It is also handy for looking up any price discrepancies between online and in-stores. There have been one-too-many times a store associate swears an item (that has languished in the sale section online,) is not on sale in the store. I simply look up the item online on my phone to show the associate. For the most part, stores agree to match online prices (which is great!)

Frankly, I do now know why J.Crew took so long to get on board with this move. However, I am really happy that they did.

First, I love the post. I always appreciate the back story to J.Crew's product. (Keep these coming!) Second, I totally agree that J.Crew rocks the best hues for cashmere. Each season brings out a new round of colors I have to have! Third, let's talk quality. (Which seemed to be lacking in the post... coincidence? Maybe. Probably not.) J.Crew needs to "dig deeper" into producing cashmere that can last longer without getting holes or pilling.

This is image comes from J.Crew's Spring catalog back in 2008. The model is pairing a timeless chambray button down shirt with the Taffeta Rugby Skirt. (I love the full skirt with pockets.) Gorgeous!

Off on a Tangent: Jason Wu for Target

So many of us were excited yesterday- and it had nothing to do with the Superbowl. It was because Jason Wu for Target collection arrived in-stores and online.

There was only one item I had my heart set on and it was the Jason Wu for Target Poplin Dress in Navy. I wasn't the only one. Ah well. Not the end of the world.

The Today Show's The Look had a great article ("The Jason Wu for Target collection is almost totally sold out") about how popular the line was and how quickly it sold out. However there was one part with a link to a video (which is embedded in this post) that really stuck out for me:

Our readers also told us that some stores were more heavily stocked than others, and that most enforced a two-pieces-per-style purchase policy. There was also a purchase limit on the website, in an effort to curb reselling. We don’t know how sucessful that strategy was, as 11,419 items marked “Jason Wu for Target” are now being sold on eBay.
In fact, one store in midtown Miami was particularly relaxed about the purchase policy. In a video posted to YouTube on Sunday, customers look on as a young couple fills their carts with all of the Jason Wu items in the store, and then check out at guest services. The user who posted the video wrote that the pair told the other shoppers they were planning to resell the pieces.

The whole debate about resellers is ongoing and there are definite pros and cons to the reselling side of the retail business. I am not going to go into that whole debate here.

I have personally seen resellers at J.Crew Sample Sales in NYC, and I am grateful that they were polite about buying up stuff (they didn't run off with all items, just a few in each category). I even read comments from other JCAs at Warehouse Sales of J.Crew who could ask resellers to look in their bags before they bought the item.

However, this couple (in the video) really ticked me off! They clearly were greedy. Did they have to take the entire stock of merchandise and shove it into their carts?! Could they not leave anything behind?! I would be fuming mad if I were the second person waiting in line, coming up empty.

After watching the video, I no longer desire the Target Poplin Dress. I am pretty happy I slept in Sunday morning. :)

This is the cover of the February 2007 catalog. I love, love, love it! Who would have thought an impromptu picnic on the rocks over looking the water could be so stylish?! J.Crew, that is who. As Liz Lemon would say, "I want to go to there".

All the outfits look laid back and chic at the same time. This is the type of classic styling that J.Crew is known for. More please!

A big "thanks!" to Desert Flower (in this post), who shared her review of this must-have bag:

The Tillary tote arrived! First off, I worried from the website description that it might be smaller than I want. Website says 11 1/2"H x 11 3/4"W x 3 5/8"D. My measurements are approximately 12 1/2"H x 13"W (across the bottom) x 5 1/2"D. It's wider across the top where it flares out.

The blue sea color is gorgeous, just what I hoped for, a cross between dark blue and navy. The handles are well stitched, and look very much like the handles on the Celine luggage tote. The front zip pocket has a working zipper, however, I'd say it's decorative since there isn't much room. The zipper and stitching remind me of the Phillip Lim Pashli satchel I lusted after.

The leather is very nice quality. I can see this bag lasting a long time. The front and back are slightly pebbled, the flared sides are smoother. The cotton lining is nice, a taupe-grey color. One inside zip pocket, two open top pockets for cell phone, etc. There are four feet on the bottom, a nice touch. The handles just allow me to put it on my shoulder (although it's not meant to be a shoulder bag). They're rolled and will be comfortable on the arm.

The bag itself is somewhat heavy. Once I get stuff in it, it will be one of my heavier bags I think. It will easily hold all my day to day, plus my iPad, and when I travel I can throw in a bottle of water.

This is very comparable in quality to Coach bags I have, for which I've paid $300 to $500. I don't think this is overpriced although I realize $328 is not cheap. This will be a work horse in my wardrobe for years. I'm not waiting for sale. I have learned my lesson with a few J. Crew pieces I wished I just bought when they came out because I never found them once they went on sale.

In my opinion, this is a major win and one of the nicest pieces I've ever purchased from J. Crew. I'm adding to my wardrobe very judiciously these days, and being ruthless with returns. I'm sure this will be one of my best purchases of 2012.

I initially thought, "whhaaat? That does not seem right." But sure enough, I had trouble tracking down a pair of denim (click here to view online) in a petite size. (This does not refer to sale items. Just new arrivals and regular priced items.) I even went under the dedicated Petite section of the website (click here to view online), and could not find one pair of jeans!

Does J.Crew no longer offer denim in petite sizes? (Seems weird to not offer them. But maybe there is a rationale behind the move that I am unaware of.)

Did you notice the lack of denim in petite sizes? Do you know why J.Crew scaled back their petite-offerings? If so, please share!

A big "thanks!" to Cynthia (of the fantastic "Delectably chic" blog), who let us know in her post here that J.Crew is coming to the Toronto Eaton Centre (click here) in Canada.

Last August, in the "J.Crew Spreads Its Wings Abroad" post, we learned that J.Crew was scouting Toronto’s Eaton Centre as a high priority location. It is great to see that it has been confirmed. Now we just need to find out when it officially opens!

What are your thoughts on this latest location for a store opening? Do you know when it will open? Will you be stopping by?

Quick Heads Up: JCrewAficionada on eBay {still not me}

Last week I posted in the ""Quick Heads Up: JCrewAficionada on eBay {not really}" post that there is an eBay seller named "jcrewaficionada" that is not me. I want to reiterate this point:

The "jcrewaficionada" Seller on eBay is not me.

I have never sold anything through the use of the J.Crew Aficionada name or blog (so if you were under the impression you purchased something directly from me, unfortunately you did not).

So why all the posts about this now? The "jcrewaficionada" Seller turned off the setting for Buyers to contact her through eBay Messages. As a result, I have been receiving more and more direct emails from potential Buyers with questions about those listings. (Even after the initial post.)

I completely understand the confusion among the Buyers of eBay. Which is why I contacted the Seller, who kindly let me know that she will be slightly modifying the screen name as soon as she can.

Until then, I hope this second post can clarify the situation and avoid any more misunderstandings among eBay buyers. :)

It's that time again, to take a look at an image of J.Crew pieces from seasons past! As caribbelle (in this post) so beautifully termed, "ye olde j crew of yore".

This look came out for the Holidays in 2007. (Please correct me if I am mistaken.) I love the fun ruffles of the white Elizabeth Halter Cami peeking through the old school Gryphon Crest Tee. The full knee-length skirt just adds that bit of feminine touch. This whole outfit is something I would totally wear today (well, if it were warmer.) ;)

J.Crew of Season's Past: {a look in the closet}

It's no secret that I like to search for images of J.Crew pieces from seasons past to collect in my virtual J.Crew LookBook. So I thought it would be fun to post an image or two from my virtual LookBook of beautiful items that J.Crew offered in the past.

The first look features the Alpine Holiday Skirt (Item 88945; $395.00). J.Crew described this whimsical skirt as: "Straight from the archives of an Italian couture mill: a scenic ski print in breathtaking colors on heavy cotton sateen. We love the vintage romance of the '60s Alpine resorts — and the precise alignment of the print on our limited-edition skirt."

I want to say this skirt came around ~~2008~~ 2007, during the Holidays. (Please correct me if I am wrong.) Although it is a skirt one would wear a few times a year, it is absolutely adorable! And I love that it is paired with an olive tee and J.Crew's Patent-Leather Mary Jane heels in yellow. (Honestly, they need to re-issue those heels ASAP!)

J.Crew Updates Website with New Arrivals!

"Thanks!" to many of you, including Tiffany Rose (in this post), as well as Irina, who let us know that J.Crew had an update to its website today (click here to view online).

There are some new arrivals for men (click here) & women (click here). {wahoo!} It looks like Crewcuts (click here) has been updated, as did the J.Crew Collection (click here).

There was also a major re-vamp of the website's design & layout. You will immediately notice the difference as several features like the log-in, and bottom navigation, have all changed location & look.
It definitely has the appearance of being more streamlined and Spring-y (if that at all makes sense). It looks nice enough, but my hope is that the update also mean the website will work more efficiently, and reflect accurate inventory.

The latest February catalog (click here to view) is now available to view. The brightness of all the colors will definitely put a smile on anyone's face. It looks like the days of over-the-top layering is gone. Instead, simple layering with bold pairings are favored.

By the way, you have to check out the Weddings & Parties section of the catalog. The images are gorgeous!!! It is a nod to what J.Crew does best (boats, water, tropical location setting, group shots). I don't know why the rest of the catalog could not have the same theme. I would have loved it!!!

As for the new arrivals... Overall I am excited from what I see. The real test comes when I see them in-person. ;)

Excited! The Perfect shirt in Liberty Art Fabrics Margaret Annie floral (item 62528; $150.00) is a throw back to J.Crew's earlier collections. The perfect shirt in a perfectly fun signature print from London's Liberty Art Fabrics! Doesn't it remind you of the Laura Shirt (Item 90108; $98.00) from a few years ago?

I am also loving the Peplum Top in Fresco Floral Sateen (Item 66184; $350.00). If it weren't for the price tag, this super feminine top would be mine. I love the sleeves, the define waist, and flared bottom. Pretty!

In Theory. The Schoolboy Blazer in Herringbone (Item 37852; $175.00) comes in fabulous colors and is a classic shape. So you would think I would love it, but I don't. I am kind of meh on it. I saw this one in-person at my store (drawn to it because of the bright hues it comes in) and the new metallic-threaded herringbone fabric looks too rumpled for my liking. It almost looked and felt like a weird linen material. It would drive me crazy trying to steam clean the wrinkles out. Pass.

J.Crew is offering an additional 50% off Final Sale items in brick and mortar (B&M) stores

I happen to stop by my local B&M and can confirm this good news. An associate let me know that it just started today.

I also want to mention that students and teachers should be able to use their 15% discount in addition to the 50% off sale items at stores.

Of course, there is not a lot of sale merchandise on shelves as they are transitioning towards Spring and the new arrivals. (As GigiOfCa mentioned, all sale items will be shipping back from stores to their warehouse at the end of the week.) However, it is a great deal on the sale items that are available (which tend to have lower prices in stores too).

This probably means that we will probably be seeing a lot of updates to Final Sale at JCrew.com in the following week or two.

J.Crew Email: Brighten up in colored denim

The email features J.Crew's Toothpick jean in garment-dyed twill (item 62443; $108.00). J.Crew mentions that "The talk-of-the-town toothpick gets a jolt of color (and an instant update) in a rainbow range of twill colors, each carefully garment-dyed for a pitch-perfect hue."

Brightly colored pants are everywhere! It is Spring's must have now. But the question is: how do you style them? For example, I got a pair of red pants that I have some trouble wearing. I either look too patriotic (with a white tee and navy blazer), Holidays (with green), or Mickey Mouse (with the white tee and black blazer). I end up just wearing a solid black top and call it a day.

Former J.Crew Tracy Gardner Now at the Gap

The Gap’s New Advisor Is J.Crew’s Former President

The poor old Gap has been limping along with poor sales figures for years now, but perhaps the company is actually ready to make good on all those promises to fix itself up and sell clothes people actually want to buy. Enter Tracy Gardner, who was the president of J.Crew from 2004 to 2010, after which she resigned in order to “spend more time with her children," according to J.Crew CEO Mickey Drexler (she was replaced by Jenna Lyons). Like Drexler, Gardner worked at the Gap before J.Crew, so this move is a homecoming of sorts.

As of now, Gardner doesn't have a specific title; she'll work "in an advisory capacity and will provide oversight and guidance on the development of our women’s product,” Gap spokeswoman Louise Callagy told WWD. And don't expect to see major changes at the store for quite some time — Callagy said that Gardner's first project is "developing holiday product for 2012." (If Gardner brings any of her J.Crew fairy dust with her, this means we can anticipate lots of sequins and artfully half-tucked collared shirts from the Gap come Christmas.) Meanwhile, the brand is still hunting for a successor for head designer Patrick Robinson, who was dismissed this past summer.

Good to see her back! (As some of you remember, Tracy Gardner left J.Crew back in 2010. Refer to the "J.Crew News: Tracey's Out, Jenna's In" post.) I thought Tracy did a great job at J.Crew too.

It will be interesting to see what Tracy's title will be at the Gap, and the amount of influence she will have to turn things around. This is a great move for the Gap, since they need some help in the style department. (Honestly, I have not shopped there in the longest time.)

On a semi-random note... what is Melissa Webb up to now? Love to hear about her too!

What I enjoy about this tote is that it works for the student and the corporate professional. It's large enough to hold a 13" laptop and can hold a lightweight jacket or cardigan.
I took a trip to San Francisco and tested it out during my day of leisure. What I discovered is that:
It's a very light bag and doesn't get heavy even after I stuffed my scarf and camera in the bag
The shape of the bag contours with your body and when you walk it doesn't jet out in a annoying fashion
There are 3 inside pockets and one has a zipper and makes putting your cell phone and keys in a secure fashion without fishing for them at the bottom of the bag
The leather is like butter!!! I found myself touching this bag throughout my adventures in the city and complementing myself on what a great purchase I made
The hardware on the purse is not over the top and actually elevates the bag
The large outside pocket is pure genius!!! If you are a commuter and have to ride public transit you can put your transit pass in this pocket and it will be secure. There is no need to keep going inside your bag to fish out your transit pass.
The double zipper closure at the top of the bag is great!!!! It gives you a sense of security and I tend to keep my ipod in the zip pocket inside the bag and keep the bag partially unzipped in order to have my ipods earplugs available so I can listen to music while walking.
In conclusion, if you do not own the Edie Tote I suggest you go out and purchase this as soon as possible. I've decided I'm going to purchase the flame color. I was a bit hesitant at first due to the fact I work for Target, but I'm not letting that stop me due to it being such a great bag. If you are hesitant to purchase this based on the price think of it as paying for itself with constant use over time.

It has recently come to my attention that there is a seller on eBay named "jcrewaficionada". To avoid any misunderstanding or confusion, I just want to say that is not me. Although, I am flattered that someone liked the phrase enough to use it as their own personal screen name to sell J.Crew merchandise. (I like the phrase too!) :)

On a semi-random note, the first time I saw "J.Crew Aficionada" on eBay was when I saw the image of the JCA header in a listing. The listing also mentioned "as seen on J.Crew Aficionada...". I smiled when I saw it for I knew this blog had made it. ;) Hazzah!

J.Crew also had a nice update to its Final Sale (click here to shop online). Looks like they added a few new items on sale too. Remember they are offering to take an additional 30% off with promo code WINTER.

J.Crew Talks About Buttons

Every once in awhile, J.Crew's 770 blog offers really interesting insight into their inner workings. Their "Behind the Seams: All Buttoned Up" post is one of them:

to get the backstory on our beautiful buttons

The process: Our designers bring me their inspiration (usually vintage buttons) and I study their markings and materials to determine which details we can incorporate into our own designs. I’ve been doing this for 20 years, so I can usually figure out right off the bat which manufacturers will be able to put a modern spin on the look we’re going for.

A great resource: Waterbury is among the oldest—if not the oldest—button companies around; they’re actually able to reproduce one-of-a-kind designs they made back in the 1800s, which is pretty amazing. The pieces start out as sheets of brass that are then tooled and molded into the company’s signature items. We use their buttons on all of our peacoats (and the U.S. military just happens to use them for their uniforms too). And, funnily enough, Waterbury is also one of the largest manufacturers of jingle bells. (How’s that for seasonally appropriate?)

Objects of desire: Along with Waterbury’s brass, one of the other materials I love is Corozo. It comes from the tagua nut, which grows in South America (the kind we use comes from Ecuador). It’s typically called vegetable ivory because it looks just like the real thing except it’s more durable, not to mention animal friendly, which we love. And even though the natural finish is beautiful on its own, it also holds other colors wonderfully.

Favorite haunts: I collect buttons myself, and some of my go-to spots around the area are Junk and Jems in Connecticut and various flea markets in upstate New York. Tender Buttons in New York City also has tons of unique options made of everything from glass to horn. They let you buy by the button instead of having to buy in bulk, which is great for mixing and matching buttons on a jacket or a cardigan.

This mini-interview had a lot of fascinating tidbits. However, I could not help thinking the entire time that J.Crew should also go back and check out their own buttons from 2007!

In the "J.Crew Jackets & Blazers... Still The Same?" post, I briefly talk about how the buttons from the latest collections look a bit cheap compared to similar styles from earlier. For example, the current Double-Cloth Townhouse Trench (Item 49612; $350.00) has gold buttons that are "meh" up close (and feel cheap to the touch). While the Lexington Blazer from 2007 has the most beautiful hand-painted Italian enamel buttons that were custom-colored. {sigh}

Now with all that said, I can see that J.Crew is already getting back on track to including amazing buttons. The Hacking Jacket in Double-Serge Wool (Item 51884; review here) is a great example. The jacket includes adorable pineapple designed enamel buttons. {love!}

1. Makeup: “Blush on your shoulder? Lipstick on the collar? (Too much mistletoe!) No worries—apply The Laundress New York for J.Crew collars & cuffs stain bar and work the stain out with a little water.”

2. Mud and dirt: “Don’t worry about mud on your heels when dashing from store to store. Touch up patent leather with a spray and a wipe of The Laundress Glass and Mirror Cleaner to clean and shine!”

What a clever post! Although, I could use less of the product placement pushing and more on the common household items solutions. J.Crew Reviews: Coat Review Roundup!

With the colder weather settling in and all the promotions that are going on, it would be great to have a dedicated post for J.Crew's outerwear collection. (By the way, I know many of you have already shared your outerwear reviews in the "J.Crew Reviews {straight from the JCAs!}" posts, and thank you so much too!!! Just adding a dedicated post so JCAs can find these outerwear reviews a bit faster.) It will be especially helpful in making thoughtful purchases since J.Crew brought back their {dreaded} Final Sale.

I have two reviews to share myself...
First up is the Double-Cloth Townhouse Trench (Item 49612; $350.00). I found that the coat was true-to-size as I went with my usual size 2 in outerwear. (For reference, I am a 34B.) Although I should add that it was a bit snug in the arms and torso when I had a sweater on. (I can easily see how sizing up might help those in between sizes.) There is no back flap to the coat, so that is something to consider if you are pear-shape (like myself). I also want to mention the buttons- they feel a bit on the cheap side. From far away they look great, but are "meh" up close. As for the material, it is the same double-cloth material that J.Crew has offered before. It is good for light Winter days, but not freezing cold temperatures.

My second review is for the Stadium-Cloth Boulevard Trench (Item 19648; $325.00, now $229.99). This coat is also true-to-size for me. I went with size 2 and it fit me perfectly- even with a sweater underneath. The arms were not tight either. It is a beautifully constructed jacket that I highly recommend. There is a back vent which is a nice touch and the collar looks great up or down. (I have definitely popped the collar once or twice to keep my neck warm too and it works!) Lastly, the stadium-cloth material is fantastic at keeping you warm.
